Forbes magazine reported today (November 20) that Sam Altman, the former CEO recently fired by OpenAI, will not be returning to the company. Altman is the mastermind behind the popular ChatGPT.

Instead, the board of directors at OpenAI has unanimously agreed to have former Twitch CEO Emmett Shear temporarily take over as CEO. The development is described by Fortune as “remarkable and pivotal.” Previously, many investors in OpenAI, such as Microsoft, Thrive Capital, Sequoia Capital, and Tiger Global, had pressured the company to reinstate Altman and Brockman.

Earlier, after Sam Altman’s resignation on November 17, OpenAI announced that Chief Technology Officer Mira Murati would serve as the interim CEO while the company searched for a replacement. Thus, within three days, there were three different individuals serving as the CEO of OpenAI.

On November 18 and 19, Sam Altman posted statements on Twitter, expressing gratitude to OpenAI staff and receiving “likes” from them. This led to speculation that there might be internal divisions at OpenAI, leading to Altman’s dismissal.

Subsequently, there were reports that OpenAI’s board of directors had reconsidered and wanted to invite Sam Altman back under Microsoft’s pressure. Microsoft had invested up to $10 billion in OpenAI but did not have a seat on the board of directors. According to internal sources, Altman would only agree to return if the entire board resigned. The former CEO even posted a picture of himself returning to the company headquarters as a “visitor” for discussions, but the negotiation process seemed to have collapsed when OpenAI announced the new CEO, Twitch founder Emmett Shear.

Currently, both OpenAI and the individuals involved have not officially commented on the situation. The Worldcoin (WLD) token price, associated with a project founded by Altman for retina scanning to receive cryptocurrency, has not experienced significant fluctuations and continues to trade within the range of $2.2 to $2.3 USD.
